Zulueta
Esteban worked near Zulueta for years. He would take trains into town from the Ariosa or from El Purio looking for a good time. On one of those trips he met Ma’Lucia, a Lucumi Santera. She wore her hair in a high weave that she proudly called African. She was a powerful woman. An entrepreneur. She made sweets and sold them for good money in bateys of the surrounding sugar mills. She seems like the type of woman who would fit right into contemporary Cuban culture, proud of her African roots and bizneando (doing business) when the opportunity lends itself. He was with her a while and enjoyed every minute of it. Decades later when he remembered her to Miguel, she still brought a smile to his lips.
