The town is known as the “geographic center” of Cuba. At the center of the center grows an ancient Ceiba tree. The town was established by residents of Remedios as a solution to the threats of pirate raids which plagued the town of Remedios. Resettlement away from the coast was seen as an option. Guaracabulla used to be more densely populated and important than Placetas. But when Placetas started growing at the turn of the 20th Century, the population shifted.
