Cruces
Cruces is the birthplace of Martin Dihigo, the Immortal, the Maestro; the baseball player who excelled at all nine positions while playing in the U.S. Negro League, the Mexican League, the Cuban league, the Dominican League and other Latin American leagues. He has been called the best baseball player ever or at least on par with the likes of Willie Mays and Honus Wagner. A monument on the central plaza of Cruces remembers this favorite son and some of the objects from his life and career are found in the history museum of the town across the street from the plaza. The town, founded in 1852, has a population of about 28,000. It several B&Bs as well as privately run restaurants as well as some architecturally beautiful structures, such as the recently renovated theatre, also off the main plaza.
